FAQ

How do I price a job from hours and materials?

Multiply the hours by your hourly rate (and by the number of people), add your materials at cost plus a markup, then add any call-out or travel fee. Add sales tax or VAT last, if you charge it. This calculator does those steps in order and shows each line.

What markup should I put on materials?

There is no single right number. Many tradespeople add a percentage to cover the time spent buying, collecting and handling materials, plus waste and returns. Start with a figure that feels fair to you and your customers, and adjust it as you see how jobs actually go.

Should the call-out or travel fee be separate?

Showing it as its own line is often clearer for customers and helps you remember that driving costs money. Put in fuel, parking and van wear for a typical trip, or use 0 if you build travel into your hourly rate instead.

What hourly rate should I enter?

Enter the rate you want to be paid for an hour of work, not just what you would like to take home. It should cover your time, tools, insurance and the unpaid hours spent on quotes and admin. If your rate is a guess, check it against a few past jobs.

Does the result include tax?

Only if you enter a tax percentage. Leave it at 0 if you do not charge sales tax or VAT. Tax rules differ by country and business type, so check with your accountant what applies to you.

Can I use this for cleaning or gardening jobs?

Yes. Use hours for the time on site, your rate per person, and put cleaning supplies, plants or disposal costs in the materials field. It works for any small service job priced by time plus materials.
